Zirconia implants are not new, they have been in clinical use for over two decades, but they have become much more refined in recent years and now represent a legitimate choice alongside titanium for many patients.

Why Some Survivors Prefer Zirconia
There are several reasons a cancer survivor might choose ceramic implants over titanium:
Concerns about metal in the body. Some survivors, after years of medical treatment, prefer to avoid additional metal where alternatives exist. Zirconia is a non-metal ceramic that integrates with bone in ways comparable to titanium for appropriate cases.
Known metal sensitivities. A small percentage of patients have measurable sensitivity reactions to titanium or other metals. Zirconia is biocompatible and a strong option for these patients.
Aesthetic concerns at the gumline. In patients with thin gum tissue (common in radiation survivors), titanium implants can sometimes show as a grayish line at the gumline. Zirconia is naturally white and avoids this.
Holistic or biological dentistry preference. Some patients have a preference for ceramic-only restorative materials. Zirconia implants combined with all-ceramic crowns offer fully metal-free dentistry.
Personal choice. Sometimes patients simply prefer the idea of a tooth-colored ceramic implant. That is a valid reason, and we respect it.
How Zirconia Implants Compare to Titanium
Both are good options. Selection comes down to individual patient factors and preferences.
Are Zirconia Implants Right for Cancer Survivors?
For most survivors, yes, with the same planning that applies to any implant placement in this population. Considerations include:
- Bone quality and quantity at the planned implant site
- Radiation history and the implications for healing
- Bisphosphonate or denosumab exposure and its effect on planning
- Overall medical status and any active immunosuppression
- Specific anatomical factors at the site

What Treatment Looks Like
Treatment with zirconia implants follows the same general path as titanium:

- Restorative phase with the ceramic crown or restoration

Some surgical and restorative protocols differ slightly between materials, but the patient experience is largely similar.
Considerations and Trade-Offs
A few honest notes on zirconia implants:
Higher cost. Zirconia implants are typically more expensive than titanium, sometimes 20 to 40 percent more depending on the specific case.
More rigid material. Zirconia is harder than titanium but less forgiving. Surgical placement requires precision; small errors that titanium would tolerate can compromise zirconia implants.
Fewer system options. Titanium has dozens of established implant systems. Zirconia options are growing but still more limited.
Longer track record needed for some applications. Titanium has 50+ years of evidence in complex cases including radiation patients. Zirconia evidence is strong but the body of literature in highly compromised patients is smaller.
